The deceased, identified as Kamal Dhyani, worked as a telecaller with a private bank and was returning home after completing a late-night shift. He was travelling on his motorcycle through the Janakpuri area in the early hours of Friday when he reportedly fell into a deep pit dug for sewer-related work. The excavation, approximately 4.5 metres deep, had been created as part of a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project but was left open without adequate safety measures, according to police records.

Police officials reconstructed the sequence of events using closed-circuit television footage and witness accounts. Around 12.15 am, Dhyani’s motorcycle is believed to have slipped into the pit located near a school on a main road. A passing motorist reportedly noticed the accident and informed a nearby security guard instead of alerting emergency services. The guard, in turn, contacted a labourer associated with the construction work at the site.

Investigators said the labourer inspected the pit and saw the fallen motorcycle and a person lying inside. Instead of calling the police or medical services, he contacted his employer, a sub-contractor linked to the project. The sub-contractor reached the spot shortly thereafter and also observed the situation. Despite this, authorities allege that no immediate steps were taken to inform law enforcement or arrange rescue assistance.

Over the next several hours, the area remained largely unattended. It was only around 8 am that a passerby contacted emergency services, leading to police intervention. By the time the victim was taken to a hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Arrest and Legal Action

Police have arrested the sub-contractor in connection with the case, booking him under sections related to causing death through negligence and concealment of information. Officials stated that at least five individuals were aware of the accident but chose not to report it promptly. Efforts are ongoing to locate and question other persons linked to the construction work who may have knowledge of the incident.

According to the first information report (FIR), the victim was brought to the hospital in an unconscious and unresponsive condition. The document further notes that the excavation site lacked barricades, warning signs, lighting, or any form of supervision, despite being located on an active roadway.
