Shia Leader Aga Syed Hassan Allegedly Prevented from Travelling to Iran for Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral

A political controversy has emerged after senior Kashmiri Shia leader Aga Syed Hassan Musavi was reportedly stopped from travelling to Iran to attend the funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to his family, immigration officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport prevented him from boarding a special flight arranged for invited guests heading to Tehran.

The incident has sparked political debate in Jammu and Kashmir, with family members alleging that conditions were imposed on Hassan's travel before he was allowed to leave the country. Government authorities have not yet issued any official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the reported action.

Aga Syed Hassan Musavi is a prominent religious figure in Jammu and Kashmir and has long been associated with the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference. He was among several leaders from the Union Territory who reportedly received invitations from Iranian authorities to participate in the funeral ceremonies of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to Hassan's son, Aga Muntazir Mehdi, who is also a People's Democratic Party (PDP) legislator representing the Budgam Assembly constituency, his father completed all travel formalities before reaching the immigration counter at Delhi airport. However, he was allegedly informed that he could travel only if he accepted certain conditions related to his public conduct during the visit.

Muntazir Mehdi claimed that immigration officials asked his father not to make any remarks that could be interpreted as being against India's official position or raise issues related to recent arrests in Jammu and Kashmir during his stay in Iran.

The PDP MLA stated that his father clarified he had no intention of delivering any political speech and was travelling solely to attend the funeral ceremony. Despite this clarification, he allegedly declined to formally accept the conditions that were communicated to him.

According to the family's version, the officials subsequently prevented him from boarding the aircraft.

The family further alleged that Aga Syed Hassan's passport was taken into custody by immigration authorities. A seizure memo was reportedly prepared at the airport and forwarded to the Regional Passport Office in Srinagar for further action.

The document, as claimed by the family, mentions that the travel document had been seized and sent to the concerned passport authority for necessary proceedings. However, the exact legal grounds behind the reported seizure have not yet been publicly explained by the authorities.

The incident has attracted attention because several other leaders from Jammu and Kashmir who had received invitations for the funeral were reportedly able to travel to Iran.

Among those invited were Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, senior Shia leader Imran Ansari, religious leader Syed Hadi and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. According to available information, Mehbooba Mufti and Imran Ansari were allowed to board the special aircraft arranged by the Iranian government for invited Indian delegates.

Reports indicate that Syed Hadi had not yet travelled at the time the incident became public.

Political observers have noted that Aga Syed Hassan has remained an influential religious personality in Kashmir for several decades. Apart from his religious leadership, he has also been associated with the moderate Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

His reported denial of travel has therefore generated significant discussion among political circles as well as members of the Shia community in Jammu and Kashmir.

Supporters of Hassan have questioned why he was allegedly stopped while other invitees were permitted to undertake the journey. They have sought greater transparency regarding the decision and have demanded clarification from the concerned authorities.

Meanwhile, no official response has yet been released by the Bureau of Immigration, the Ministry of External Affairs or the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the claims made by Hassan's family.

The matter has also reignited discussions about overseas travel restrictions involving political and religious leaders from Jammu and Kashmir. Legal experts point out that passport seizure or travel restrictions generally require procedural justification under applicable laws, although the exact circumstances of each case may differ.

The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has drawn international attention, with delegations from multiple countries travelling to Tehran to pay their respects. Several Indian political leaders were also invited to participate in the ceremonies, reflecting longstanding cultural and diplomatic interactions between India and Iran.

While the central government has nominated its official representatives for the funeral, invitations were also extended by Iranian authorities to several political and religious personalities from different parts of India, including Jammu and Kashmir.

As of now, the allegations made by Aga Syed Hassan's family remain unverified by government agencies. Officials have not confirmed whether any conditions were imposed on his travel or explained the reasons behind the reported seizure of his passport.

With no official clarification available, questions continue to be raised about the incident. Political parties and community leaders are likely to watch closely for further developments, while any response from the concerned authorities could provide greater clarity on the circumstances that led to the reported travel restriction.
