    Delhi Gets Relief From Heat as IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Rain and Strong Winds

    New Delhi: Residents of Delhi witnessed a welcome change in weather conditions as temperatures dropped and cloudy skies brought relief from the scorching summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, forecasting light rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in several parts of the city.

    According to weather officials, the changing weather pattern is expected to continue over the next few days, providing relief from high temperatures but also raising concerns about possible disruptions caused by rain and gusty winds.

    The minimum temperature recorded at Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, stood at 24.6 degrees Celsius, which was around two degrees below the normal temperature for this time of year. The reading was also lower than the previous day, indicating a noticeable shift in weather conditions.

    Meteorologists said the drop in temperature was mainly due to increased cloud cover and moisture entering the region. As a result, residents experienced cooler conditions compared to the intense heat seen in recent weeks.

    The IMD has warned that light to moderate rainfall may occur in different parts of the city, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are also expected.

    A yellow alert indicates that residents should remain aware of changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions. While the forecast does not point to severe weather, strong winds and rainfall may affect traffic movement and outdoor activities.

    Weather experts have linked the current conditions to multiple atmospheric systems affecting northern India. A western disturbance moving across the region, combined with a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and neighbouring areas, has created favourable conditions for rain and thunderstorms. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are also contributing to the unstable weather pattern.

    The IMD expects similar conditions to persist over the coming days, with maximum temperatures likely to remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius. This is lower than the temperatures recorded during recent heatwave-like conditions in the capital.

    Apart from bringing relief from the heat, the weather change has also improved Delhi’s air quality. Data from monitoring agencies showed that the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) improved significantly and entered the satisfactory category.

    The AQI was recorded at 82 during the morning hours, a considerable improvement compared to the previous day’s average of 123, which fell under the moderate category. Experts say rainfall and stronger winds help disperse pollutants, resulting in cleaner air and better visibility.

    According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s classification, AQI levels between 51 and 100 are considered satisfactory, while values between 101 and 200 are categorised as moderate.

    Forecasts suggest that air quality is likely to remain stable over the next few days due to the continued influence of rainfall and wind activity. However, authorities will continue to monitor conditions closely as weather patterns can change quickly.

    Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms. Motorists are being urged to drive carefully on wet roads, while pedestrians should avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning activity. Strong winds may also lead to minor disruptions, including falling branches and temporary power outages in some areas.

    The cooler weather comes as a welcome break for Delhi residents who have been dealing with high temperatures and humid conditions for several weeks. Health experts note that lower temperatures can reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, although people should continue to stay hydrated and follow weather advisories.

    With rain, cloud cover, and gusty winds expected to continue, Delhi is likely to experience more comfortable weather conditions in the coming days. However, authorities are encouraging residents to stay updated on official forecasts and take necessary precautions whenever adverse weather conditions develop.
