    Hyderabad Police Crack Down on Illegal Kite Material Trade, Seize 345 Banned Manja Bobbins

    In a significant enforcement action aimed at ensuring public safety, Hyderabad police have arrested a man for allegedly stocking and selling prohibited kite-flying material that has been banned by the Telangana government due to safety concerns. The operation, carried out by the Commissioner’s Task Force of the West Zone, resulted in the seizure of 345 bobbins of nylon-coated manja, with an estimated market value of ₹6.9 lakh.

    The accused, identified as a 42-year-old local trader who runs a kite-related business, was taken into custody during a targeted inspection at a shop located in the Kalapathar area of Hyderabad. Officials said the raid was conducted based on specific information regarding the illegal sale of banned kite strings ahead of the festive season, when demand for such products typically increases.

    Details of the Operation

    According to police officials, the manja seized during the operation was nylon-coated and fell under the category of materials explicitly prohibited under state regulations. The ban was imposed in the interest of public safety, as such materials have been found to pose serious risks to pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, birds, and animals.

    The Task Force team reportedly acted swiftly after receiving credible inputs and conducted a surprise check at the premises. During the inspection, officers found large quantities of the banned material stocked for sale. The accused was immediately detained, and the seized items were taken into police custody for further legal procedures.

    Officials confirmed that the trader was fully aware of the ban but continued the activity, allegedly sourcing the material through informal channels to meet market demand.

    Why the Material Is Prohibited

    Nylon-coated manja has been banned across Telangana following repeated incidents of injuries and accidents linked to its use. Unlike traditional cotton thread, this material is significantly stronger and sharper, making it hazardous when used in densely populated urban areas.

    Authorities have repeatedly warned that the use and sale of such manja can lead to serious injuries, damage to public property, and harm to wildlife. The government has also urged citizens to use only permitted, eco-friendly alternatives for kite flying.

    Police Advisory to Traders and Public

    Following the arrest, police officials reiterated that strict action will continue against anyone found violating the ban. They warned traders not to stock or sell prohibited items, stating that ignorance of the law will not be accepted as a defence.

    “We are intensifying checks across the city, especially in areas known for kite-related trade. Public safety is our priority, and anyone found violating the ban will face legal action,” a senior police official said.

    The police also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that children do not use unsafe kite materials and to report any illegal sale to the nearest police station or through designated helplines.

    Seasonal Demand and Enforcement Challenges

    Kite flying remains a popular recreational activity in Hyderabad, particularly during festive periods. However, authorities say the increased demand often leads to illegal trade practices, making enforcement a continuous challenge.

    Police teams have been conducting awareness drives along with enforcement actions to educate traders and consumers about the risks associated with banned materials. Officials noted that while many shopkeepers comply with regulations, a few continue to violate norms for financial gain.

    Legal Proceedings Underway

    The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway to identify the supply chain involved in procuring the banned material. Police are also examining whether similar products were distributed to other locations in the city.

    Officials indicated that additional raids may follow as part of a broader drive to eliminate the sale of unsafe kite-flying materials across Hyderabad.

    Authorities stressed that public cooperation is crucial in maintaining safety during festive seasons. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing or using prohibited items, even if they are easily available in the market.

    Environmental groups and resident welfare associations have also welcomed the police action, stating that such measures are necessary to prevent avoidable accidents and promote safer alternatives.
