Akhilesh Yadav Raises Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revision, Seeks Transparency from Election Commission

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has raised questions over the process and communication surrounding the recent revision of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh, calling for greater transparency and clarity from the Election Commission of India (ECI). Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, the former Chief Minister expressed concern over how projections about voter deletions appeared to be known in advance by leaders of the ruling party, even before the official draft voter list was released.

Mr. Yadav’s remarks come in the backdrop of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted across Uttar Pradesh, a large-scale exercise aimed at updating voter records ahead of upcoming elections. The draft electoral roll, published earlier this week, showed a significant change in voter numbers compared to previous lists.

    Questions Over Advance Claims

According to Mr. Yadav, all political parties, including booth-level agents, participated in the SIR process without objection, trusting that the exercise would be carried out fairly and in accordance with established procedures. However, he said concerns arose when public statements made by senior leaders suggested precise estimates of voter deletions even before the draft list was made public.

He pointed out that before the official publication of the draft voter list, figures regarding the number of voters likely to be removed were already being mentioned in public forums. This, he said, naturally raises questions about how such information became available ahead of time.

“If projections are being stated before the official data is released, it creates confusion and doubt in the minds of voters,” Mr. Yadav said, adding that public confidence in electoral processes depends heavily on transparency and equal access to information.

    Data Discrepancies and Clarifications Sought

The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh has stated that following the SIR exercise, approximately 2.89 crore voters were excluded from the draft list, while 12.55 crore voters were retained out of the earlier total of 15.44 crore. Officials explained that exclusions were due to factors such as deaths, permanent migration, and duplicate registrations.

Mr. Yadav, however, questioned certain data patterns emerging from the revision process. He drew attention to differences between voter numbers in rural Panchayat records and Assembly electoral rolls, noting that the same Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are involved in preparing both sets of data.

He expressed concern over how a higher number of voters appeared in Panchayat records compared to Assembly voter lists, and sought clarification on how such variations could occur if the data collection process was consistent.

    Final List Awaited

The Election Commission has announced that the final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh will be published on March 6, allowing time for claims, objections, and corrections. This window is intended to ensure that genuine voters who may have been left out of the draft list can apply for inclusion.

Mr. Yadav said he hopes that during this period, special attention will be given to ensuring that no eligible voter is excluded. He emphasised that large-scale voter registration exercises should prioritise accuracy and inclusiveness, particularly in a state as populous and diverse as Uttar Pradesh.

    Demand for Transparency

The Samajwadi Party chief also questioned the timing of data releases related to Panchayat elections, suggesting that delays in publishing final figures could create unnecessary speculation. He stressed that timely and complete disclosure of electoral data is essential to maintain public trust.

He added that political parties can raise concerns and seek clarifications, but ultimately, it is the Election Commission that must address these issues in a clear and reassuring manner.

    Election Commission’s Role

The Election Commission of India has consistently maintained that the SIR process follows established guidelines and is conducted to ensure clean and updated electoral rolls. Officials have reiterated that the revision exercise is a routine administrative measure and that mechanisms exist for voters to verify and correct their details.

Election experts note that revisions of this scale often lead to debates and scrutiny, particularly in states with large electorates. They also point out that transparency, communication, and responsiveness play a key role in addressing public and political concerns.

    Looking Ahead

As Uttar Pradesh moves closer to finalising its electoral rolls, attention will remain on how effectively grievances are addressed and corrections are made. The coming weeks are expected to see increased engagement between political parties, election officials, and voters.

For now, Mr. Yadav’s statements have added to the broader discussion on electoral transparency and institutional trust, issues that remain central to democratic processes across the country.
