Sophie Devine Creates WPL History with Explosive 32-Run Over, Lights Up Navi Mumbai Clash

New Zealand star all-rounder Sophie Devine delivered one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Sunday, producing a breathtaking batting display that rewrote tournament records. Representing Gujarat Giants, Devine smashed a stunning 32 runs in a single over, registering the most expensive over ever bowled in the WPL and leaving fans and cricket experts in awe.

The historic feat came during Gujarat Giants’ clash against Delhi Capitals Women at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Devine’s power-packed innings not only set a new benchmark in the league but also underlined her status as one of the most destructive batters in women’s cricket.

    A game-changing sixth over

The defining moment of the match unfolded in the sixth over of the Gujarat Giants innings, the final over of the powerplay. Delhi Capitals captain turned to Sneh Rana in an attempt to break the opening partnership. What followed, however, completely altered the course of the game.

Devine launched a relentless attack, striking the ball cleanly and with authority. The over began with two crisp boundaries, instantly building momentum. She then followed it up with four towering sixes in succession, sending the ball sailing over the ropes and sending shockwaves through the stadium. The over yielded a massive 32 runs, setting a new WPL record for the most runs scored off a single over.

With this, Devine surpassed the previous WPL record of 28 runs in an over, which had been conceded by Deepti Sharma during the 2025 season. The achievement instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament.

    Dominant powerplay sets the tone

Opening the batting for Gujarat Giants, Sophie Devine looked in sublime touch right from the first ball. Along with her opening partner, she provided her team with a solid and aggressive start. The duo made full use of the powerplay restrictions, punishing loose deliveries and rotating the strike effectively.

By the end of six overs, Gujarat Giants had raced to 80 without loss, marking one of the highest powerplay scores in WPL history. Devine’s 32-run over played a crucial role in that explosive start, putting Delhi Capitals under immediate pressure.

Cricket analysts noted that Devine’s ability to switch seamlessly between power-hitting and placement made her innings particularly special. Her shot selection remained sharp, and she showed remarkable balance and timing throughout the powerplay phase.

    Near-miss for a historic century

Devine continued her aggressive approach even after the powerplay, bringing up her half-century in just 25 deliveries. She maintained a high strike rate, confidently taking on both pace and spin, and looked well on course to become the first batter to score a century in the Women’s Premier League.

However, the crowd was left slightly disappointed when Devine fell short of the three-figure mark. She was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 95 off just 42 balls. Despite missing out on a century, her innings stood out as one of the finest knocks the league has witnessed so far.

Her contribution gave Gujarat Giants a commanding platform and ensured the team remained in control for most of the contest.

    Records and milestones

Devine’s extraordinary over now sits at the top of the list of the most expensive overs in WPL history:

    • 32 runs – Sneh Rana (Delhi Capitals) vs Gujarat Giants, Navi Mumbai, 2026

    • 28 runs – Deepti Sharma (UP Warriorz) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lucknow, 2025

    • 27 runs – Tanuja Kanwar (Gujarat Giants) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Brabourne Stadium, 2023

The record highlights the evolution of batting standards in the WPL, with players showcasing increasing confidence, power, and tactical awareness.

    Fans and experts react

Fans at the DY Patil Stadium erupted with every big hit, while social media platforms quickly filled with clips and praise for Devine’s remarkable over. Former players and cricket commentators described the innings as a “statement performance” that reflected the growing competitiveness and entertainment value of the Women’s Premier League.

Experts also pointed out that such performances play a crucial role in elevating women’s cricket globally, inspiring young players and drawing new audiences to the game.

A boost for the Women’s Premier League

Sophie Devine’s record-breaking effort is another reminder of why the WPL has become one of the most exciting cricket leagues in the world. High-scoring encounters, individual brilliance, and intense competition have helped the tournament gain widespread attention within a short span of time.

As the season progresses, fans can expect more thrilling moments, with international stars and emerging domestic talents continuing to raise the bar.

For Gujarat Giants, Devine’s innings will be remembered as a turning point that showcased their batting depth and intent. For the league, it stands as a landmark moment that will be replayed and discussed for years to come.
