    Pakistan Launches Large-Scale Security Operations in Balochistan After Coordinated Attacks

    Pakistan’s security forces have carried out extensive counter-operations across Balochistan following a series of coordinated attacks in multiple districts of the province, resulting in the deaths of 145 suspected militants over a period of nearly two days, according to statements made by provincial authorities.

    Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said the casualties occurred during targeted raids conducted on Friday and Saturday, as well as during subsequent combing operations that continued into Sunday. Addressing a press briefing in Quetta, Bugti described the scale of the operation as one of the most significant security responses mounted in the province in recent years.

    The coordinated incidents, which unfolded almost simultaneously in areas including Quetta, Gwadar, Mastung and Noshki, led to the loss of lives among security personnel and civilians. Provincial officials stated that at least 17 members of law enforcement agencies and 31 civilians were killed during the violence, which prompted immediate deployment of army units, police forces and specialised counterterrorism teams.

    Authorities said the attacks were claimed by an armed separatist group operating in the region. Following the incidents, security agencies sealed multiple locations and launched search operations to track remaining suspects and recover weapons.

    Government Claims and Regional Tensions

    Pakistan’s military leadership has alleged that the groups behind the attacks received external support. Senior officials reiterated claims of cross-border involvement, asserting that the perpetrators had links outside the country. These allegations were repeated by federal ministers, who said operations would continue until all armed elements involved were neutralised.

    India has firmly rejected these claims, calling them unfounded and repetitive. In a formal response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that such accusations are often used to divert attention from internal challenges. The ministry urged Pakistan to address local grievances and longstanding political and social issues within the region rather than attributing unrest to external actors.

    The exchange of statements comes amid already strained relations between the two neighbours, with security developments in border regions often adding to diplomatic tensions.

    Situation on the Ground

    Security officials said that during the attacks, several government installations were targeted. In some locations, armed groups reportedly entered public buildings, seized equipment and damaged infrastructure before retreating. In one district, inmates were freed from a local jail, while weapons and ammunition were taken from police facilities.

    In response, authorities suspended mobile internet services across large parts of Balochistan for more than 24 hours, citing security concerns. Road travel was restricted in sensitive areas, and rail services were temporarily halted as precautionary measures.

    Residents of Quetta described a tense atmosphere following the incidents. Markets remained largely closed, and traffic was sparse as people stayed indoors. Visible signs of damage, including burned vehicles and debris, were reported from several neighbourhoods affected by explosions and gunfire.

    Local traders and residents expressed concern over safety and uncertainty. Many said daily life had been severely disrupted, with fears of further incidents keeping businesses shut and schools closed in some areas.

    Ongoing Operations

    Security forces continued area-dominance and search operations on Sunday, focusing on rural and semi-urban pockets believed to be used as transit routes. Officials said the objective was to prevent regrouping and ensure the safety of civilians.

    The provincial government maintained that law enforcement agencies were acting with coordination and restraint, and that steps were being taken to restore normalcy. Authorities also indicated that assessments were underway to evaluate damage to public property and provide assistance to affected families.

    Background of Unrest

    Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area, has witnessed periodic unrest for decades, rooted in demands for greater political autonomy, control over local resources and development. Security operations have often intensified following major incidents, leading to cycles of violence and enforcement measures.

    Analysts note that while immediate security responses may curb short-term threats, long-term stability will depend on addressing underlying economic and political grievances in the region.

    As operations continue, officials said further updates would be shared once the situation stabilises. For now, heightened security remains in place across key districts, with authorities urging residents to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid unnecessary travel.
