Mettur Dam Water Level at 93.06 Feet, Discharge Continues to Meet Downstream Needs

The water level in the Mettur Dam, one of Tamil Nadu’s most critical water reservoirs, stood at 93.06 feet on Tuesday, according to official data released by the Water Resources Department. The current level remains well below the dam’s full reservoir capacity of 120 feet, reflecting the seasonal pattern of inflows during this period of the year.

Officials said the inflow into the reservoir was measured at 161 cubic feet per second (cusecs), while the discharge from the dam was maintained at 5,000 cusecs. The controlled release is primarily intended to meet irrigation requirements in the Cauvery delta region and to ensure drinking water supply for several districts downstream.

The Mettur Dam, built across the Cauvery river in Salem district, plays a vital role in supporting agriculture, drinking water supply, and power generation in Tamil Nadu. Water released from the dam sustains millions of farmers in districts such as Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam, especially during the samba and kuruvai cultivation seasons.

Officials monitoring the reservoir said the current inflow is modest, as the northeast monsoon has already receded and rainfall activity in the Cauvery catchment areas has reduced significantly. During this time of the year, inflows typically depend on local rainfall and limited upstream releases, rather than heavy monsoon-fed flows.

Despite the lower inflow, authorities have continued regulated discharge to balance agricultural needs with long-term water security. Engineers stated that daily assessments are being carried out to ensure that releases do not adversely affect storage levels ahead of the summer months, when demand for drinking water usually rises.

Farmers’ associations in the delta region have been closely watching the dam’s storage levels, as water availability directly impacts irrigation schedules. While the present discharge is considered adequate for ongoing agricultural activities, farmer representatives have urged the State government to remain cautious in its water management strategy to prevent shortages later in the year.

“The present level is stable, but careful planning is essential,” a senior official from the Public Works Department said. “We are coordinating with district administrations and agricultural departments to ensure water is used efficiently and equitably.”

The Mettur Dam also supports hydroelectric power generation, although power output is generally limited when water levels are moderate. Officials noted that priority is currently being given to irrigation and drinking water needs rather than electricity generation.

In recent years, water management at Mettur has drawn increased attention due to changing rainfall patterns, variability in monsoon behaviour, and interstate water-sharing arrangements related to the Cauvery river. Authorities have emphasised the importance of data-driven reservoir operations to adapt to these evolving challenges.

The State government has also been promoting water conservation measures and efficient irrigation practices in the Cauvery basin, including micro-irrigation and crop diversification, to reduce dependency on large releases from the dam.

As of now, officials said there is no cause for immediate concern, but they stressed that reservoir levels will continue to be monitored closely in the coming weeks. Any significant changes in inflow or downstream demand will be addressed through timely adjustments in discharge.

The next official update on the Mettur Dam’s water level and storage status is expected as part of the routine daily bulletin issued by the authorities.
