Delhi Braces for Intense Cold as IMD Issues Two-Day Alert; Temperatures Dip to Season’s Lowest

Delhi is experiencing one of its coldest phases of the winter season, with temperatures dipping sharply across several parts of the national capital. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ayanagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, marking one of the lowest readings this season. In response to the prevailing conditions, the weather department has issued a two-day orange alert, advising residents to remain cautious as cold conditions are expected to persist.

Several monitoring stations across the city reported minimum temperatures hovering close to the three-degree mark, significantly below normal levels for this time of year. Areas such as Palam and the Ridge also witnessed notably low temperatures, indicating a widespread impact of the cold spell across Delhi.

    Weather Conditions to Continue

The IMD has forecast that cold conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, accompanied by dense fog during early morning hours. According to the department’s outlook, skies are expected to remain largely clear during the day, but the mornings may see reduced visibility in several parts of the city.

Daytime temperatures are predicted to stay within the range of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures could fall further, remaining between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius. Weather officials have cautioned that both minimum and maximum temperatures may remain below seasonal averages.

In its latest bulletin, the IMD also highlighted the possibility of foggy conditions extending beyond Delhi into neighbouring regions, including parts of northern India, over the coming days. These conditions could affect daily routines, especially during early morning travel hours.

Impact on Daily Life and Travel

The sharp drop in temperature has already begun to affect daily life in the capital. Many residents were seen seeking warmth in sunny open spaces during daylight hours, while early mornings remained challenging due to biting cold and low visibility.

Dense fog has led to travel advisories, particularly at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Airport authorities have cautioned passengers about potential delays, advising them to check with airlines for updated flight information. Some airlines also issued travel advisories after visibility levels dropped significantly during the morning hours.

Road travel has also been affected in certain areas, with reduced visibility slowing traffic movement during peak morning hours. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving in fog-prone zones.

    Air Quality Shows Slight Improvement

Amid the cold weather, Delhi’s air quality showed marginal improvement compared to recent days. According to official data, the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) moved into the “poor” category from previously higher levels. However, a number of monitoring stations continued to record readings that may cause discomfort, especially for sensitive groups.

Experts note that colder temperatures and low wind speeds can trap pollutants close to the ground, making air quality conditions unpredictable during winter months. Residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, have been advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure during early morning and late evening hours.

    Advisories and Precautions

Health experts recommend taking precautions during periods of intense cold, including wearing adequate warm clothing and avoiding sudden exposure to low temperatures. Maintaining indoor warmth and staying hydrated are also advised to reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses.

Schools and offices are closely monitoring weather updates, and parents are being advised to remain attentive to official announcements regarding any changes to schedules due to weather conditions.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to follow official advisories and stay informed about weather developments over the coming days.

    Outlook

While a slight rise in temperatures may occur during daytime hours, weather officials indicate that cold mornings and nights are likely to remain a feature in the near term. Fog conditions are also expected to persist intermittently, especially during early hours.

As winter conditions intensify, authorities are focusing on ensuring public safety and smooth functioning of essential services. Yugcharan News will continue to provide timely updates on weather conditions and advisories relevant to the capital and surrounding regions.
