Trump’s Remarks on PM Modi Spark Political Storm in India, Congress Launches Fresh Attack on Centre

Fresh political controversy erupted in India on Wednesday after remarks made by former United States President Donald Trump about Prime Minister Narendra Modi resurfaced during a public address in the United States. The comments, which included Trump mimicking a conversation with the Indian Prime Minister, have been seized upon by the Congress party to renew its attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government over its handling of relations with Washington.

Speaking at a political gathering of Republican lawmakers, Trump claimed that Prime Minister Modi had personally approached him to discuss the issue of steep trade tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian goods. In a moment that quickly went viral on social media, Trump theatrically reenacted the interaction, portraying Modi as seeking relief from the tariffs while simultaneously asserting that the two leaders shared a cordial relationship.

The remarks immediately triggered sharp reactions in India’s political circles, particularly from the Congress leadership, which accused the government of allowing India’s global standing to be undermined.

Congress Accuses Government of Weak Diplomacy

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, led the Congress’s counter-offensive by sharing edited clips of Trump’s speech on social media, accompanied by sarcastic commentary. Gandhi alleged that the Prime Minister’s approach to the United States reflected a position of weakness rather than strategic confidence.

In a video message, Gandhi contrasted the current government’s handling of Washington with what he described as India’s firm foreign policy stance during the early 1970s. Without naming specific administrations, he suggested that earlier leadership had resisted external pressure even during moments of intense geopolitical tension, while the present government appeared eager to accommodate foreign demands.

The Congress leader further claimed that India’s strategic autonomy had been compromised during recent diplomatic and military developments, alleging that critical decisions were influenced by external pressure rather than national interest.

    Jairam Ramesh Targets Modi–Trump Optics

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also weighed in, criticising what he described as the dramatic shift in optics surrounding India–U.S. relations. Ramesh pointed to the evolution of high-profile public events and slogans associated with bilateral ties over recent years, arguing that symbolic diplomacy had failed to translate into tangible economic or strategic gains for India.

In a social media post, Ramesh questioned whether the current state of relations justified the public enthusiasm and political capital previously invested in projecting a close personal bond between the two leaders.

Tariffs, Trade Pressure and Russian Oil

At the heart of the controversy lies the issue of U.S. tariffs on Indian exports. During his remarks, Trump reiterated that the tariffs were linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, a decision that has drawn scrutiny amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.

According to Trump, tariffs of up to 50 percent were imposed on certain Indian goods, including a significant levy directly connected to energy imports from Russia. While some trade analysts believe these measures are intended as leverage in broader negotiations, opposition leaders argue that the tariffs reflect a failure of diplomatic engagement by the Indian government.

Trump also claimed that India had substantially reduced its oil imports from Russia following U.S. pressure, a statement that has further fueled political debate at home.

    Defence Deals Also Draw Attention

Adding another dimension to the discussion, Trump referenced delays in defence deliveries, particularly attack helicopters ordered by India several years ago. He claimed that the process was now being expedited under his watch, implying that previous delays were linked to broader trade and diplomatic disagreements.

While government sources in India have not officially responded to these claims, defence experts note that delays in large military procurements often involve complex logistical, technical and bureaucratic factors rather than purely political considerations.

BJP Yet to Issue Formal Response

As of Wednesday evening, the BJP and the Prime Minister’s Office had not issued an official response to Trump’s remarks or the Congress’s criticism. Party insiders, however, dismissed the opposition’s statements as politically motivated and accused Congress leaders of misrepresenting international comments for domestic gain.

Senior BJP leaders privately maintained that India–U.S. relations remain strong and are based on institutional cooperation rather than personal equations between leaders.

    Diplomatic Optics Under Scrutiny

The episode has once again highlighted how international statements can reverberate strongly within India’s domestic political landscape. With trade negotiations ongoing and global alliances shifting rapidly, foreign policy decisions are increasingly becoming a central point of political contestation.

Analysts say that while strong personal diplomacy can help open doors, sustained national interest depends on long-term economic strategy, military preparedness and balanced global engagement.

As the debate intensifies, the controversy is expected to dominate political discourse in the coming days, especially as Parliament reconvenes and opposition parties seek clarity from the government on India’s diplomatic posture.

For now, Trump’s offhand remarks have reopened old questions about power, perception and India’s place in a changing global order — questions that are likely to shape both political narratives and policy discussions in the months ahead.
