Noida Workers’ Protest Turns Disruptive Amid Wage Dispute, Authorities Begin Talks

A large-scale protest by industrial workers in Noida disrupted normal life on Monday after demonstrations over wages and workplace conditions intensified in parts of the city’s industrial belt. Authorities said the situation was being closely monitored, with additional police deployment and labour department intervention initiated to restore order and begin discussions with stakeholders.

The unrest was reported primarily from Noida’s Phase 2 industrial area, where workers from multiple manufacturing units gathered to press for higher wages, improved working conditions, overtime compensation and better grievance redressal systems.

Visuals from the area showed damaged vehicles, road blockades and traffic congestion on key routes, while police personnel were deployed in significant numbers to manage the crowd and prevent further escalation.

Protest Escalates Over Wage Concerns

According to officials and worker representatives, the demonstrations had been building over the past few days but escalated sharply on Monday morning.

The immediate trigger appears to be growing dissatisfaction among workers over wage disparity with neighbouring Haryana, where the state government recently announced a substantial revision in minimum wages for various categories of labour.

Under the revised Haryana structure, monthly wages for unskilled workers were reportedly increased by approximately 35%, from ₹11,274 to ₹15,220. Similar revisions were announced for semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled workers.

Workers in Noida have since been demanding comparable wage revisions in Uttar Pradesh, arguing that the cost of living and workload in the National Capital Region require more equitable pay structures.

Many employees said they were currently earning significantly less than workers in nearby industrial centres despite similar job roles and productivity expectations.

Workers Raise Safety and Welfare Issues

Beyond wages, workers have also highlighted concerns over workplace safety, long shifts, irregular breaks, lack of weekly offs and inadequate systems for raising complaints.

Several protesting workers said they had repeatedly raised concerns with employers but had seen little improvement.

One worker participating in the demonstration said the demands were centred around fair pay and humane work conditions.

“We want fair wages, overtime compensation and dignity at work,” a worker said, alleging that several industrial units were not following basic labour welfare standards.

Another worker said employees in nearby cities were receiving significantly better compensation packages, while many workers in Noida continued to face salary deductions and limited support mechanisms.

Some women workers also raised concerns related to workplace safety and timely meal breaks, calling for stronger enforcement of labour protections.

Police Step In, Appeal for Calm

As the protest intensified, police and district administration officials rushed to the site to assess the situation and contain the unrest.

Authorities said senior police officers were present on the ground and that efforts were being made to maintain peace while facilitating dialogue.

Officials urged workers to remain calm and avoid being influenced by rumours or provocative messages.

A district administration advisory appealed to workers to return to their workplaces peacefully and assured them that their concerns would be addressed through appropriate institutional mechanisms.

Control room numbers were also circulated to assist workers and residents affected by the disruption.

Traffic movement in several parts of Noida was affected due to blocked roads and diversions. Commuters reported delays on connecting routes between Delhi and Noida during peak morning hours.

Traffic police teams were deployed to regulate movement and issue alternate route advisories.

Uttar Pradesh Government Responds

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that workers must receive fair wages, safe working environments and basic facilities in accordance with labour laws.

In an official statement, he directed departments concerned to engage with industrial units and worker representatives to find a solution.

The Chief Minister also said strict action should be taken against individuals allegedly attempting to create disorder or exploit the situation.

He instructed authorities to increase security in industrial zones and ensure that peace and public safety are maintained.

Officials said the state labour department has been asked to coordinate with district authorities and industrial managements to address the issues raised by workers.

Labour Department Forms Resolution Panel

In response to the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh labour department has constituted a committee to facilitate dialogue between workers, industrial associations and administrative officials.

The panel is expected to review wage concerns, workplace welfare standards and compliance with labour regulations.

Sources in the administration said the committee will include senior labour officials, local representatives and members of recognised worker groups.

The aim is to create a structured mechanism for addressing grievances and reducing tensions in the industrial sector.

Labour experts note that industrial belts in fast-growing urban centres often face pressure due to rising living costs, wage expectations and workplace welfare gaps.
