Nepal Elections 2026: Rapper-Turned-Politician Balen Shah’s Party Heads for Historic Victory

    Yugcharan News | 7 March 2026

The political landscape of Nepal appears to be undergoing a historic transformation as the results of the 2026 general elections indicate a massive surge in support for a new political force led by rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah. His party, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is heading toward what analysts describe as a sweeping victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, challenging the dominance of traditional political parties that have ruled Nepal for decades.

The elections are the first national polls held since the dramatic Gen Z-led protests of 2025, which forced the resignation of the government led by K. P. Sharma Oli. The uprising, driven largely by young voters frustrated with corruption, unemployment, and political instability, reshaped the political climate and opened the door for new leaders and movements.

RSP Leads Across Majority of Constituencies

According to data released by Nepal’s Election Commission, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has already won multiple parliamentary seats and is leading in dozens of constituencies as vote counting continues across the country.

Preliminary results show that the party has secured around 20 seats and is leading in more than 90 constituencies out of the total 165 directly elected seats in the House of Representatives. These results suggest that the party may secure a dominant position in the parliament once counting is completed.

In Nepal’s parliamentary system, the House of Representatives has 275 members, including 165 elected through the First-Past-The-Post system and 110 through proportional representation. If the current trends continue, the RSP could emerge as the largest political party in the parliament and potentially form the next government.

    Rise of Balendra Shah

At the center of this political shift is Balendra Shah, popularly known as “Balen”, a 35-year-old engineer, rapper, and former mayor of Kathmandu.

Shah first gained national attention when he contested and won the Kathmandu mayoral election in 2022, defeating candidates from major political parties. His victory was widely seen as a sign that younger voters were ready for change and were willing to support candidates outside the traditional political establishment.

Now, just a few years later, Shah’s political influence appears to have expanded dramatically. In the parliamentary elections, he is contesting from the Jhapa-5 constituency, where he is leading by a huge margin against former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, who once dominated the region politically.

According to early vote counts, Shah has received tens of thousands of votes while Oli trails far behind, signaling a major political upset.

    Collapse of Traditional Party Dominance

For decades, politics in Nepal has largely been dominated by three major political forces:

    • Nepali Congress

    • Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist)

    • Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre)

These parties have formed multiple coalition governments since Nepal became a federal democratic republic in 2008. However, frequent political instability has plagued the country.

In fact, Nepal has witnessed 14 different governments in the last 18 years, with many administrations collapsing before completing their full terms. Political analysts say this instability created widespread frustration among citizens, particularly younger voters.

The rise of the RSP appears to reflect a growing public demand for political reform, transparency, and new leadership.

Gen Z Protests That Changed Nepal

The turning point in Nepal’s politics came in September 2025, when massive protests erupted across the country.

Thousands of young people, many of them students and first-time voters, took to the streets demanding political accountability and an end to corruption. The protests, which were organized largely through social media platforms, quickly spread across major cities including Kathmandu and Pokhara.

At times, the demonstrations turned violent, with clashes reported between protesters and police. According to reports, at least 19 people were killed during the unrest, triggering a nationwide political crisis.

The protests eventually forced Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli to resign, paving the way for an interim government and new elections.

The 2026 polls are therefore widely seen as a referendum on the country’s political system.

Other Parties Struggle to Keep Up

While the RSP is surging ahead, traditional parties are struggling to maintain their electoral influence.

The Nepali Congress, led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, has secured a few seats and is leading in several constituencies but remains far behind the RSP.

Similarly, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), led by K. P. Sharma Oli, has won only a limited number of seats and is trailing in many key constituencies.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, popularly known as “Prachanda,” has managed to secure a few victories but has also seen its overall influence reduced.

Political experts say the election results suggest a significant weakening of the traditional political structure that dominated Nepal for decades.

    Celebrations Across the Country

As vote counting continues, supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party have begun celebrating in several parts of the country.

Large gatherings have been reported in cities such as Kathmandu, where supporters have taken to the streets waving party flags and celebrating what they believe could be a historic political transformation.

Many of them see the rise of the RSP as a symbol of hope for a new generation of political leadership.

Young voters in particular appear to have played a major role in shaping the election outcome. Observers note that voter turnout among youth was significantly higher than in previous elections.

    International Reactions

The elections have also attracted attention from several international governments and diplomatic missions.

Officials from the United Kingdom and the European Union have congratulated Nepal for conducting peaceful elections and expressed their willingness to work with the next government.

Meanwhile, China, which maintains close political and economic ties with Nepal, has also congratulated the country for successfully holding the elections.

India, Nepal’s largest neighbor and a key development partner, has expressed hope that the new government will continue strengthening bilateral relations.

    What Comes Next

Although vote counting is still underway, political analysts believe the results could reshape Nepal’s political future.

If the Rastriya Swatantra Party manages to secure a parliamentary majority, Balendra Shah could become Nepal’s next prime minister — an extraordinary rise for someone who entered politics only a few years ago.

The coming days will be crucial as the Election Commission completes the vote count and announces the final results.

For many citizens, the election represents a chance for a fresh start. After years of political instability, corruption scandals, and economic challenges, voters appear eager for a new direction.

Whether the RSP will be able to deliver the reforms that voters expect remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the 2026 elections have already marked a turning point in Nepal’s political history.
