Vizianagaram Police Flag Overspeeding and Inattention as Key Causes of Fatal Road Accidents

    Yugcharan News / 14 April 2026

Road safety concerns have once again come into focus in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district, with police officials identifying overspeeding, driver inattention and disregard for traffic rules as the primary reasons behind fatal road accidents in the region.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, A.R. Damodar said the district police were prioritising accident prevention and working toward reducing road fatalities through enforcement, public awareness and targeted infrastructure measures.

His remarks come amid growing concern over rising traffic risks on district roads, particularly on busy stretches connecting urban centres and surrounding rural areas.

Police Stress Need for Responsible Driving

The Superintendent of Police said many serious road accidents in the district could be prevented if motorists followed basic safety norms.

According to him, some of the most common causes of fatal crashes include:

    • Overspeeding
    • Distracted driving
    • Failure to follow lane discipline
    • Neglect of traffic signals and road signs
    • Rash overtaking

Officials said road safety is not only an enforcement issue but also a matter of public awareness and personal responsibility.

Police have appealed to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders and commercial vehicle drivers, to exercise caution while driving.

    Special Focus on Accident-Prone Routes

Vizianagaram police said they have taken focused steps to identify and improve safety on accident-prone stretches.

According to officials, recent interventions have been implemented on several major routes, including:

    • Vizianagaram–Denkada corridor
    • Vizianagaram–Chintalavalasa stretch
    • Vizianagaram–Gajapathinagaram route

    Measures reportedly introduced include:

    • Installation of speed breakers
    • Improved traffic monitoring
    • Warning signage
    • Patrol presence in sensitive areas

Police said these steps have already helped reduce accident frequency on some roads.

Authorities indicated that similar measures may be expanded to additional stretches based on accident data and traffic movement patterns.

    Zero-Accident Goal Drives Enforcement

The district police have said they are working with the broader objective of reducing preventable road deaths.

While officials acknowledged that achieving “zero accidents” is a long-term target, they said sustained enforcement and cooperation from the public are critical.

    The road safety drive includes:

    • Checking for drunken driving
    • Helmet and seat belt enforcement
    • Speed monitoring
    • Awareness campaigns in schools and communities
    • Coordination with transport authorities

Police said stricter action may be taken against repeat traffic violators and dangerous driving behaviour.

Road Safety a Wider Public Concern

Road accidents continue to remain a major public safety issue across India.

Experts note that factors such as poor compliance with traffic rules, road design challenges and lack of safety awareness contribute significantly to road fatalities.

In semi-urban and district regions, accident risks can rise due to:

    • Mixed traffic conditions
    • Inadequate lane separation
    • Poor night visibility
    • Sudden pedestrian crossings
    • Limited emergency response access

Safety experts have consistently said that enforcement alone cannot solve the issue unless accompanied by behavioural change among road users.

    Public Cooperation Essential

Police in Vizianagaram have urged residents to support the district’s road safety efforts by following traffic rules and reporting risky driving behaviour.

Officials stressed that even small precautions can help save lives, including:

    • Wearing helmets properly
    • Using seat belts
    • Avoiding mobile phone use while driving
    • Not driving under fatigue or stress
    • Maintaining speed limits

The district administration is also expected to continue working with local bodies and transport departments to improve road infrastructure where needed.

    Focus on Prevention

The latest appeal by police reflects a broader shift toward preventive policing and safety-based traffic management.

Officials say reducing road deaths requires both better systems and responsible public participation.

As traffic volume continues to rise in growing district centres like Vizianagaram, authorities say timely interventions and public awareness will remain central to ensuring safer roads.

For now, district police have reiterated that road safety must be treated as a shared responsibility — one that requires attention from drivers, pedestrians and civic authorities alike.
