Stones Thrown at Police During Demolition Drive Near Delhi Mosque, Five Injured

    New Delhi | January 7, 2026

At least five police personnel were injured after violence broke out during an anti-encroachment demolition drive near the Syed Faiz Elahi mosque and graveyard at Turkman Gate in central Delhi early Wednesday.

The demolition was carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) following a Delhi High Court order issued in November 2025, which directed authorities to clear illegal structures from land near Ramlila Ground.

    What Happened

Around 300 MCD officials and workers, supported by police, arrived at the site with about 30 bulldozers and 50 dump trucks to remove unauthorised constructions. During the operation, a group of local residents allegedly began pelting stones at officials and police personnel.

Police were forced to use tear gas to control the situation. According to senior police officer Nidhin Valsan, around 25–30 people were involved in stone pelting, resulting in minor injuries to five policemen.

“The situation is fully under control now. Action will be taken against those involved,” the officer said.

    Detentions and Investigation

Police have detained five people so far and are identifying others using over 100 video recordings from the area. Cases have been registered based on statements from injured police personnel and MCD workers.

    Background of the Dispute

The Delhi High Court had granted three months to the MCD and the Public Works Department (PWD) to clear 38,940 square feet of encroachments near Turkman Gate.

    According to MCD officials:

    • 0.195 acres of land is legally leased and houses the mosque

    • All structures beyond this area were declared unauthorised

    • No valid ownership documents were produced by the mosque committee or the Delhi Waqf Board for the encroached land

    Encroachments included:

    • Portions of a road and footpath

    • A baraat ghar (banquet hall)

    • A parking area

    • A private diagnostic centre

    Legal Challenge

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court issued notices to the MCD, DDA, Ministry of Urban Development, PWD, and the Delhi Waqf Board after the mosque’s managing committee challenged the demolition order.

    The committee claimed:

    • The land is a notified waqf property

    • Lease rent is being paid to the Waqf Board

    • They do not oppose removal of illegal structures, except the graveyard
