PM Modi, Amit Shah & Rahul Gandhi Meet to Select New Chief Information Commissioner

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi met on Wednesday to decide the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and fill vacancies in the Central Information Commission. The meeting took place in the PM’s chamber in Parliament, just days after heated “vote chori” exchanges in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session.

The CIC is currently struggling with more than 30,000 pending RTI cases and has been functioning with only two information commissioners due to eight vacant posts. The Commission has also been without a Chief Information Commissioner since September 13, when Heeralal Samariya retired. This is the seventh time since 2014 that the CIC has been left headless, raising concerns about delays and transparency in governance.

According to the RTI Act, appointments are made by a committee headed by the Prime Minister, with the Leader of the Opposition and a Union Minister as members. The government received 83 applications for the CIC post and 161 applications for Information Commissioner posts. The shortlisted names will now be recommended to the President for final appointment.
