A major controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 examination has triggered nationwide concern after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the medical entrance test amid allegations of a large-scale question paper leak. The development has affected more than 22 lakh students across the country and prompted a multi-agency investigation spanning several states.

According to reports and preliminary findings shared by investigative agencies, the alleged leak may have originated in Maharashtra before spreading digitally to multiple regions, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir.

Officials stated that central investigative authorities, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), are currently examining the role of several individuals suspected of involvement in the circulation of confidential examination material before the test was conducted.

    Investigation Expands Across Multiple States

Sources associated with the investigation claimed that the leaked material allegedly began circulating nearly 45 hours before the examination. Investigators are reportedly analysing digital communication records, encrypted messaging platforms and suspected financial transactions connected to the case.

One individual from Nashik in Maharashtra was detained for questioning after authorities traced alleged links between him and the circulation of examination-related material. Officials claimed that technical surveillance and digital tracking methods were used during the operation.

Investigators further alleged that sophisticated digital tools, including encrypted channels and temporary server systems, may have been used to distribute the question paper across different states.

Authorities, however, clarified that the investigation is still ongoing and no final conclusions have yet been reached regarding the full extent of the network.

Alleged Leak First Flagged in Rajasthan

As per reports, the controversy first gained attention after a “guess paper” allegedly circulated among a group of students and coaching-linked individuals in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, known as a major coaching hub for competitive examinations.

Sources stated that after the examination concluded, certain teachers reportedly compared the circulated material with the actual NEET-UG question paper and found significant similarities in multiple sections.

The matter was subsequently escalated to authorities through official communication channels. Following preliminary verification, intelligence agencies and Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group (SOG) reportedly initiated an investigation into the source of the material.

Investigators later traced possible links extending from Rajasthan to Haryana and Maharashtra, officials familiar with the case claimed.

    Multiple Arrests and Detentions Reported

According to reports, Rajasthan authorities have detained and arrested several individuals in connection with the case. Some suspects are allegedly linked to consultancy operations and educational networks operating in coaching centres.

Investigative agencies are reportedly examining whether candidates received digital PDF copies or printed versions of the leaked paper before the examination.

Officials have not publicly disclosed complete details regarding the identities of all accused individuals, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities also stated that legal provisions related to criminal conspiracy, cheating and destruction of evidence are being examined as part of the case.

NTA Cancels Examination Amid Public Pressure

The National Testing Agency officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination after allegations surrounding the leak intensified and public pressure mounted from students, parents and education groups.

The decision came after several reports suggested that confidential examination material may have been compromised before the test date.

The cancellation has caused widespread uncertainty among medical aspirants, many of whom had spent months preparing for the highly competitive examination. Students and parents across the country have demanded transparency regarding the investigation and clarity on the revised examination schedule.

Education experts noted that such incidents could significantly impact the credibility of national-level examinations if stricter safeguards are not implemented.

    Questions Raised Over Examination Security

The controversy has once again sparked debate over the security mechanisms surrounding major competitive examinations in India.

Experts have called for stronger digital monitoring systems, tighter logistics management and stricter accountability mechanisms within examination bodies and affiliated institutions.

Several education activists and student organisations have reportedly demanded structural reforms in the examination process, including enhanced cybersecurity measures and independent audits of examination operations.

Meanwhile, authorities have assured that all individuals found involved in any malpractice will face strict legal action after the completion of the investigation.

Students Seek Clarity on Future Schedule

Following the cancellation announcement, lakhs of students are now awaiting official information regarding the next steps. The NTA is expected to issue fresh guidelines regarding re-examination dates, application validity and admission timelines in the coming days.

Students and parents have expressed concern over the emotional stress and academic uncertainty caused by the controversy, especially for aspirants preparing for medical admissions this year.

Counsellors and academic experts have advised students to remain patient and continue their preparation until revised schedules are officially announced.

The investigation into the alleged paper leak continues, with agencies expected to conduct further interrogations, digital forensic analysis and financial tracking in the coming days.
