Dense Fog Disrupts Air Traffic in Delhi, Snowfall Forces Suspension of Leh Flights

Severe winter weather conditions caused widespread disruption to air travel across parts of northern India on Monday, as dense fog reduced visibility in the national capital and heavy snowfall led to the temporary suspension of flight operations to Leh. The adverse weather not only affected flight schedules but also raised concerns over air quality and commuter safety in several regions.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, early morning operations were hit as thick fog blanketed the city, significantly lowering visibility levels. Several flights experienced delays during peak morning hours, causing inconvenience to passengers. Airport authorities confirmed that the fog was the primary reason behind the disruption, with pilots required to follow low-visibility procedures before take-off and landing.

Alongside the fog-related challenges, Delhi’s air quality remained a concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the ‘poor’ category during the morning hours, reflecting a combination of pollution and weather conditions that further reduced visibility. Several areas across the city reported similar readings, adding to the difficulties faced by commuters and aviation authorities alike.

Airlines issued advisories urging passengers to check the latest status of their flights before leaving for the airport. Travelers were also advised to arrive well in advance, as security checks and boarding procedures were adjusted to manage delays efficiently. Despite the challenges, airport operations continued with enhanced coordination between air traffic control and airline crews to ensure safety.

In a separate development, flight operations to and from Leh were temporarily halted due to heavy snowfall in the region. The sudden spell of snow affected runway conditions, making it unsafe for aircraft operations. As a precautionary measure, all take-offs and landings were suspended until weather conditions improved and safety checks could be completed.

Passengers scheduled to travel to Leh were informed about the suspension and advised to remain patient as authorities monitored the situation closely. Airlines assured travelers that flights would resume once conditions stabilized and necessary clearances were granted. Passengers were also warned about possible extended waiting times and were encouraged to stay updated through official communication channels.

Weather conditions also impacted other parts of the country. Mumbai woke up to hazy skies, with smog visible across several key areas, including business and residential zones. While the air quality in the city remained in the ‘moderate’ range, the haze was noticeable and prompted concerns about pollution levels during the winter season.

In the northeastern region, Guwahati experienced a cold and foggy morning as a cold wave swept through the city. Temperatures dipped, and residents reported reduced visibility during early hours. Meteorological officials indicated that such conditions are typical during this time of year, with colder nights and foggy mornings expected to continue.

Authorities across affected regions emphasized the importance of caution during adverse weather conditions. Drivers were advised to maintain safe speeds, use fog lights where necessary, and avoid unnecessary travel during early morning hours. Airlines and airport officials reiterated that safety remains the top priority, even if it results in delays or cancellations.

Meanwhile, environmental authorities in Delhi confirmed that certain pollution control measures had been relaxed recently following a brief improvement in air quality. However, residents were urged to continue adhering to existing guidelines to prevent further deterioration, especially as weather conditions can quickly worsen pollution levels during winter.

Experts noted that winter fog and snowfall are recurring challenges for transportation networks in northern India. While modern navigation systems and improved forecasting have helped reduce risks, sudden changes in weather can still disrupt operations. Coordination between weather agencies, aviation authorities, and local administrations plays a crucial role in minimizing the impact on daily life.

As weather forecasts suggest continued cold conditions in the coming days, travelers are advised to remain alert and plan their journeys carefully. Airlines are expected to keep monitoring conditions and issue timely updates to passengers. For now, authorities remain focused on restoring normal operations while ensuring that safety standards are not compromised.
