Dense Fog and Cold Wave Grip India: Transport Disruptions and Public Safety Concerns

India is currently facing an intense cold wave and persistent dense fog conditions that are affecting large swathes of the country, particularly in the northwest, central, eastern, and northeastern regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these conditions are expected to continue on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, with minimum temperatures dropping significantly in several states and visibility severely restricted in many areas.

    Fog and Visibility Challenges

Recent episodes of dense fog have already created serious disruptions. In parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, visibility has reportedly dropped to zero meters, causing flight cancellations, delays, and hazardous driving conditions. Cities such as Gorakhpur, Gwalior, and Jabalpur experienced near-zero visibility, grounding flights and disrupting highways connecting Delhi to Patna. The IMD has issued warnings that dense to very dense fog (visibility under 200 meters) will persist in isolated pockets across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan.

The situation in eastern Uttar Pradesh is particularly concerning, with impacts expected to last until January 12, while Bihar and Assam may experience morning haze until January 10. Despite clearer skies in some regions like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi-NCR, and western Uttar Pradesh, which allowed sunlight to return temporarily, night temperatures have fallen sharply. A fresh spell of surface-level fog is forecasted to develop again on Tuesday morning, further complicating transport and commuting.

    Cold Wave and Temperature Outlook

The cold wave has caused maximum temperatures to remain 4.5°C or more below normal across several states. Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, eastern Rajasthan, and Jharkhand are expected to experience particularly cold days on January 6. Similarly, West Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will continue to feel the chill through January 7.

Cold wave conditions, defined by minimum temperatures falling 4.5°C below normal with drops exceeding 6.5°C within 24 hours, are likely to affect isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh (January 6-9), East Rajasthan (January 6-10), Chhattisgarh (January 6-8), and Jharkhand (January 6-7). Observations indicate that plains in northwest India may record minimum temperatures as low as 2.4°C, as seen recently in Etawah, while ground frost threatens Uttarakhand, and light snowfall or rain could impact Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

    Driving Weather Systems

Meteorologists explain that several weather systems are driving the current cold snap. A cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh, another over north Pakistan, and a strong subtropical jet stream moving at 130 knots at 12.6 km altitude are contributing to the sharp temperature drops. Additionally, an equatorial trough near the southern Bay of Bengal may bring southern rains later in the week, affecting regions like Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kochi, which can expect light rainfall.

According to Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and prominent weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, the Western Himalayan region may witness increased cloud cover with isolated snowfall in some areas, including Jammu to Shimla. Dense morning fog is expected in Punjab, Haryana, parts of Rajasthan, and northern Madhya Pradesh, though winds are likely to clear the fog later in the day.

Impact on Transport and Public Safety

Dense fog, poor visibility, and the ongoing cold wave have significantly impacted road and air transport. Airports across the affected regions have issued advisories warning passengers of possible flight delays and cancellations, while highways are prone to accidents due to low visibility and icy patches. Authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution, maintain safe driving speeds, and use fog lights while commuting.

Moreover, agricultural activities and daily life are being affected. Frost and low temperatures threaten winter crops, while outdoor workers, elderly residents, and individuals with respiratory conditions are at higher risk. The IMD recommends wearing warm clothing, limiting prolonged outdoor exposure, and taking appropriate measures to protect livestock and vulnerable communities.

    Looking Ahead

The IMD forecasts that relief is unlikely before January 8 in the northern plains, meaning residents must remain vigilant for the next few days. While southern India may see intermittent rain due to cyclonic activity over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, the northern, central, and eastern regions will continue to contend with cold, foggy mornings and chilly daytime conditions.

This persistent cold wave underscores the challenges posed by climate variability and extreme weather events in India. With urban areas like Delhi-NCR already dealing with pollution issues, dense fog exacerbates health risks and transport disruptions, highlighting the importance of preparedness and timely advisories for both authorities and the public.

In conclusion, as India grapples with one of its harshest winter conditions in recent years, residents are advised to stay informed, follow safety protocols, and anticipate continued disruptions in daily life. The combination of dense fog, plummeting temperatures, and transport challenges will test both human and infrastructural resilience over the coming week.
