Delhi recorded a 32% decrease in traffic challans during the Holi festival this year compared to the previous year, according to data released by Delhi Police. Despite the drop in violations, authorities still booked 1,204 people for drunken driving, while four people lost their lives in road accidents during the celebrations.

Overall, 4,929 challans were issued across the capital during Holi. The western range recorded the highest number of violations with 969 challans, followed by the central range with 884 challans and the southern range with 857 challans.

Apart from drunken driving cases, 3,725 challans were issued for other traffic violations. These included offenses such as triple riding on two-wheelers, riding without helmets, and vehicles with tinted glass.

Traffic data shows that two-wheeler riders accounted for the majority of drunken driving cases. More than 900 cases involved two-wheeler riders, while 142 cases were registered against car drivers and other vehicle operators.

In comparison, 7,230 challans were issued during Holi in 2025, including 1,213 cases of drunken driving.

Police also reported 22 road accidents across Delhi during this year’s Holi celebrations. Out of these, 18 were minor accidents, while four were fatal, resulting in 18 injuries and four deaths.

Looking at previous years, the city recorded 13 accidents in 2025, including six fatal accidents that caused six deaths. In 2024, the number of fatal incidents was higher, with 27 accidents reported, including 14 fatal accidents that led to 14 deaths.

To ensure safety during the festival, Delhi Police deployed personnel at 134 key intersections across the city and established 79 joint checking points with local police stations. Officers used alcometers to detect drunken driving and prevent accidents, while maintaining strict monitoring throughout the celebrations.

Authorities said the enforcement measures and public awareness campaigns played a key role in reducing the number of traffic violations this year. Police have urged citizens to continue following traffic rules to ensure safer roads during festivals and other major events.
