Customs Cleanup Is My Next Big Assignment, Says FM Nirmala Sitharaman at HTLS 2025

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025 that a major overhaul of the customs system is her next big task. She stated that “customs is my next big cleaning-up assignment,” ahead of the Union Budget 2026.

The minister addressed concerns over states offering election freebies, saying that several states borrow through high-cost loans to fund such schemes. She added that the Centre is discussing ways for states to restructure loans, as many state budgets cannot sustain these costs.

On the falling rupee, which recently touched a record low of ₹90.43, Sitharaman said the currency will “find its natural level.” She noted that when BJP was in opposition, the economic situation was worse, with high inflation and a fragile economy, whereas today India’s fundamentals have strengthened.

Listing challenges handled by the government, Sitharaman highlighted recovery after Covid, global conflict impacts on food security, border tensions, election-year spending, and the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s banking and economic systems after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The HTLS 2025 theme is “Transforming Tomorrow,” featuring leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CJI Surya Kant, EAM S. Jaishankar, and several industry figures.
