Xi’s visit is the first state visit by a Chinese president to Washington in more than a decade, giving the occasion significance beyond the immediate negotiations.

The schedule includes a formal White House arrival ceremony, military honours, closed-door discussions between Trump and Xi and a state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump. Xi and Peng are also scheduled to visit the National Archives during the trip.

Despite the extensive ceremonial arrangements, officials and analysts have cautioned that the visit is unlikely to produce a comprehensive resolution of the many disputes between Washington and Beijing.
